Biopolymers

Let’s give your business what it needs to grow.

BIOPOLYMERS

Late 2012 the idea was born to abandon synthetic syntans based on phenolics, formaldehyde, acrylics and focus on a new sustainable range of biopolymers consisting of cellulose, chitosan, starch, inulin and proteins. By altering the molecular weight and substitute specific groups on the biopolymer you are able to increase penetration, reactivity, hydrophobicity, fullness and softness of the crust. You even can connect triglycerides to the biopolymer to produce an all in one product with superior fullness and softness. All biopolymers can be made in same reactors currently used for the production fossil based re-tanning agents. No additional investment needed to produce biopolymers. Typical reaction conditions to manufacture biopolymers are between 37 and 120 degrees Celcius (99 F and 248 F), at ambient pressure for 2 till 6 hours.

All products are high concentrated  pumpable liquids, designed to ship in bulk or in Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC’s).

After more than a decade a comprehensive range of eight biopolymers technologies has been established to handle the entire (re-)tanning process. Besides that, new biopolymers have been developed for personal care and coating industry.

FEATURE BENEFITS OF BIOPOLYMERS AT A GLANCE
  • Low cost of raw materials

  • Easy access to raw material

  • Suitable to produce in bulk during one shift

  • Nontoxic raw materials, easy to store and safe for operators

  • Fossil free

  • Low COD and low salt

  • Free of plasticisers

  • Wide and deep product portfolio range available for the entire (re-)tanning process

HOW TO USE - BIOPOLYMERS

Depending on the chemical or enzymatic reaction, the final biopolymer can be used in a wet-white process as tanning/re-tanning agent. In case of chrome tanned leather it can be applied in the re-chroming, re-tanning or together with a fat liquor. Alter works closely together with tanneries in order to optimize the result of BioPolymers in the leather making recipe

Alter has the recipes and technology to help you produce a wide variety of biopolymers such as
Charge: anionic, non-ionic, amphoteric and cationic
High, medium and low molecular weight fatty biopolymers

OTHER APPLICATIONS FOR BIOPOLYMERS

  • Thickener and fat substitute in food

  • Seizing agent in paper industry

  • Excipient in pharmaceuticals
