About Alter Chemical Innovations
The story
Alter, founded in 2003 with clear focus on leather chemical development. The set-up of a laboratory in Portugal guaranteed a constant flow of new ideas, processes and products. In 2016 the activities moved to bioscience centre in Lelystad (NL), which is part of Wageningen University.
Although traditional chemistry for leather is still a big part of the business, from 2012 attention shifted to bio-polymers for (re)-tanning and fatliquoring, resulting in a deep and broad range of proven processes and chemical building blocks. ​
By using the right reaction conditions and catalysts, reaction time has been reduced with maximum 50% and the reduction of wastewater even reached 60%. The latest spin-off is bio-polymers for personal care and coating industry using the same optimized technology.
